100 Mbps FIOS What ?

As I was reading Gizmodo and other technology blogs today, I came across a very good looking headline , and it was

100Mbps Verizon FiOS to (Probably) Arrive in 2009: Hong Kong Still Snickers

It was a very much catchy headline as there are parts in world that enjoy a high average download speed , here in India the best connection we can get is 8Mbps which is of course slower than many of other connections, and the price ~ $300. This is not available for home connections , only business connections with a particular amount of Bandwidth Usage per month. For home customers the maximum speed available is 2Mbps on a DSL connection.

According to the posts mentioned Hong Kong has FIOS (Fibre Optic Service) speeds of 100Mbps and price is just $48.50 a month. I might be somewhat cheaper now but still its a lot cheaper than Indian Broadband where there are 2 Major Carriers of Internet the FLAG and TATA.

The US citizens enjoy a 5Mbps conection for almost $40 per month( Don’t take it seriously if it is wrong) upto 30Mbps for around $140 per month. At least you guys in US have a browsing speed , I have two connections at my home and the speed is 512Kbps each and the price I have to pay for both is approximately $65(Rs 3000) , so imagine I am paying loads of money to keep my computer connected with Internet.

Well, Verizon is promising this 100Mbps FIOS by next year and this might get Indians Service Providers to act smart and raise our Broadband speeds from 256Kbps to at least 2Mbps which will enhance our browsing experience and also let us view high definition videos online which we usually do not watch :) .

Technology and Search

Its been quite a time since Google has made it debut and provided with advertising alternatives to all the individuals around the world. Each day there are cases of frauds in PPC and Search Marketing and there are number of cases pending in the courts as well. Some time back when I was active on Digital Point forums I saw a thread where his account was debited for $6k in a single campaign on Google Adwords.

Imagine the risks in PPC Marketing and search Marketing as well. Oh yes I forgot to mention that I am also a member of one Search Engine Marketing company named as Pepperjam Networks. It is a full time Internet Marketing Agency working round the clock. There are some features of pepperjam which makes it different from other conventional networks and the features are.

  1. Good quality affiliate tracking, reporting, and payment technology.
  2. Cool Web 2.0 interface.
  3. Reputed merchants.(E-Bay, DKNY, etc )
  4. Innovative pepperjam ADS™.(PPC , CPA  ads )
  5. Affiliate transparency meter(Higher the ratings you get paid more).
  6. Good communication tools( Communicate with the Merchant directly from within site).
  7. Resource center that you can use to gain knowledge!

Although they are around one year old but they continue to practice growing trends in affiliate marketing and Search Engine Marketing. If you have not yet signed up with them, I think the time is now.

Smartphones to Sport Folding TFT Screen From Next Year

It seems that the display screen of smart phones is growing proportionally with its growing fan base. That is why probably mobile phone companies are spending heavily on research and development of folding and rollable displays. These proposed displays have actually started a kind of rat race between companies as the first one to come up with these phones could easily hit a goldmine.

Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) in association with PilotFish have engineered a TFT-EPD (Thin Film Transistor Electrophoretic Display) panel that could solve the display solutions for Smartphone manufacturers. It has a folding top display and a bottom sliding display which literally doubles the screen size to a whooping 5 inches. The two displays are separated by a 1cm flexible strip. In the images you would it appears that there is actually a break in the center of the complex display but actually it is the software taskbar. The next step which companies are gearing up to is bringing touchscreen feature into such large screens and it is expected to be made available for use sometime next year.

What Keeps Us Running?

Over and over again I have been asked the question – “What keeps millions of websites in the world running the way they do? “. Today I would like to reflect a bit on the dynamics of a website.

The up and running website that you see in front of your eyes is formed by the perfect symbiosis of three things – domain name, the webhost and the Web CMS. All these three things when presented with compelling and regularly updated content form a successful website like ours. Let’s just look a bit more in their details.

Domain name: This is the web address of any site. It can be a complete name like YouTube or in abbreviated form like that of ours. Domain name is immediately followed extensions which may be a ‘.com’ as in Youtube.com or ‘.info’ as in our domain. Other popular extensions are ‘.net’, ‘.org’, ‘.tv’ and ‘.me’.  From the investment perspective a website owner normally spends 5 % of his overall budget for a domain name.

Webhost: This is perhaps the most important element that forms a website. A webhost provides the space where all kinds of data’s and files are stored. From the investment perspective a website owner normally spends 90- 95 % of his overall budget for a webhost. Since the choices are pretty wide in this field it often becomes hard to buy affordable web hosting. We are using Hostgator as our webhost.

Web Content Management System: CMS is used to create and manage the content of the website. There are lots of options here as well but fortunately 90% of them are open source and hence free of cost. We are currently using Wordpress as our Web CMS.

Hope with this input you would have got some idea about what a website is all about.

Nokia N97: Can It Challenge the iPhone

It seems that Nokia has finally decided to take the iPhone head on. They have announced that they will be releasing the new N97 early next year. If the critics are to be believed, this phone could very well snatch the Phone of the year award from the iPhone.

New NokiaN97 will sport a 3.5″ touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera and an amazing 32 Gigabits of memory. The 5MP camera will be supported by Carl Zeiss Tessar lens and dual LED flash. You would be able to record DVD quality video as well. The phone will also allow a memory upgrade of 16 GB, taking the maximum available memory space to whooping 48 GB.

The Nokia N97 is expected to be priced around $ 700.It will allow a music playback of 37 hours and 4.5 hours of video playback. Nokia N97 will run on Symbian S50 5th Edition and is expected to be very similar to 5800 Express Music in terms of user interface.

You would be also able to get widgets on to your home screen. Nokia says that with these gadgets you would be able to update social networks with your details regularly.

We have included a video for better idea .
