Not so long ago, the only media available to back up computer data was floppy disks. These days, we have quite a large number of media options available to back up your computer data. These range from microSD cards, BlueRay Disks, Internal Hard disk, External Hard disk and the latest SSD disks.
One of the main reasons of having an external backup of everything you currently have is the ransom ware like WannaCry which can encrypt your hard disk and you will not be able to get any data back without paying the ransom.
The ransom for decrypting your computer can range from $300 ( around ₹ 19,000) to $3000 ( around ₹ 1,90,000). This can easily be prevented without spending any considerable amount and you also get a external backup.

We have listed only three highest selling hard disks on Amazon India. In case you decide to buy a external Hard drive be sure to check the ratings for the seller and the return policy in case of mismatch of the product.
I had purchased external hard disk when the rate of a 500GB Hard drive were more than 6,000 rs and it is a Go Flex Freeagent Seagate Hard drive which unfortunately works on a USB 2.0 connection.
Although a USB 3.0 adapter is out for the hard disk but instead of purchasing the adapter I would prefer a new external Hard drive with USB 3.0 so that I will be able to save more data.
Well to finish , you definitely need a backup drive because you do not know what is in the future, whether your computer’s hard disk crashes or your get infected with any ransom ware like WannaCry. To be sure you need at least two things
- Internal Hard Drive : Your computer should have another internal hard disk ,which should have a switch to power it on and off. You can replicate the data once in two to three days if you have lots and lots of data. This way you will be sure that your data is almost safe even in case of primary hard disk crash or even getting encrypted during use. The secondary hard disk can be used to recover data.
- External Hard Drive : In case of your important data which you occasionally want to use, you should use your external drive. I have a collection of more than 58,000 images in my external hard drive which is a lot considering that they are more than 12 years old images and I do not want to loose them.
They require around 300 GB of space and therefore I have them stored safely without the fear of even hard disk crash or any ransom ware.
Please note, by dropping your external hard drive you might loose the data or the power to store data. Hard drives are delicate and should be stored carefully.
So how many images have you stored in your computer or laptop and do you need a external hard drive to save that data ? In case your answer is yes I would love to know that in the comments section below.
