Microsoft has recently released the latest version of Office – Office 2010 for computers running Windows Operating System. The feature packed Office 2010 has been positively accepted by the users with most of them reporting positive reviews about it. However a few of the users are facing some installation issues with the software , where Office 2010 install process halts or stops unexpectedly before completion and then remains stuck there forever .

However this is only the start of the real problem. Most of the users today can fix this by starting the Task Manager and terminating the process. The actual problem is that the despite the failed install, users are not able to restart the installation process again. This is because the “Install wizard” does not start again as the previous setup was not completed. There is no entry of a failed installation in the “Add or Remove” programs list which makes the end users really helpless in such situations. The install can’t either be rolled back to older versions of Office (such as Office 2007) due to midway termination of setup.

To fix Office 2010 installation errors, follow these steps suggested by Microsoft

Step 1: Download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.

Step 2: Run Windows Install Clean Up.

Step 3: Highlight Microsoft Office 2010 entry in the list and then click Remove.

Note: If there are any other old or redundant office entries such as Office 2007 or other Office standalone products such as Visio in the list, do highlight and remove them together.

Step 4: Quit the Windows Install Clean Up when cleanup process finished.

Step 5: Close all applications.

Step 6: Click Start, in the Search box, type regedit and press Enter to run Registry Editor.

Step 7: Expand the registry tree on the left pane and locate the following two registry subkeys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office

Step 8: Right-click on the registry subkeys and click Delete to delete those keys.

Step 9: Open Windows Explorer, and then browse to the C:\Program Files and/or C:\Program Files (x86) folder.

Step 10: Perform the following actions:

If it exists, rename Microsoft Office to “Microsoft Office OLD”

If it exists, rename OfficeUpdate to “OfficeUpdateOLD”

If it exists, rename OfficeUpdate14 to “OfficeUpdate14OLD”

Step 11: Click Start, in the Search box, type %Temp% and press Enter.

Step 12: Empty (delete all files and folders inside) the Temp folder.

Note: If some files can’t be deleted, just skip them.

Step 13: Empty the Recycle Bin.

Step 14: Restart your computer. Try to install Office 2010 again.

These steps should fix the Office 2010 failed installation error.

Using Print Screen on Mac OS X is quite easy. In a PC, unless you are using Snipping Tool provided with higher versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7, you have to necessarily copy the screen capture to an image editor to get the final result whereas in Mac the screen capture can be automatically saved to the desktop.

Allen asks: While working on my PC, I accidently deleted Recycle Bin icon from the desktop. How can I get it back?

Unlike Windows XP or Windows 7, when you right click the Recycle Bin icon in Windows Vista, you get the option to “Delete” it. It’s not uncommon for users to confuse “Empty Recycle Bin” with “Delete” and thus some of us end up deleting the Recycle Bin Icon in Vista.

In this article we will focus on simplest ways to restore the disappeared Recycle Bin Icon in Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Windows Vista

Step 1 : Right click on Desktop and Click Personalization.

Step 2 :In the Personalization Windows, Click on “Change Desktop Icons link” as marked in the image.

Step 3: In the Desktop Icon Settings Window, check the box next to recycle Bin to show the Recycle Bin icon on desktop. Click Apply and then Ok to confirm.

The Recycle Bin Icon will reappear on your Desktop

Windows 7

Follow the same steps as in Vista or use the following steps.

Step 1. Click on Start, in the Search Box type “Desktop Icons” and hit Enter

Step 2. In the Desktop Icon Settings Window, check the box next to recycle Bin to show recycle bin on Desktop. Click OK to confirm.

So that’s how you make a disappeared Recycle Bin icon reappear in Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Ian asks: I need to download a CNN video to embed in my PowerPoint presentation. Is there any free CNN Video Downloader that I can use?

News sites like CNN stream FLV videos in a way that it hides the actual URL of the video behind JavaScript. However once you start streaming the video, its file location gets stored in your browsers cache. Now the actual video can be easily downloaded from that address.

Ian, you do not need any CNN video downloader to download CNN videos. Firefox web browser and a simple addon would be more than enough. Here is a step by step guide.

Step 1. Install FlashGot addon in Mozilla Firefox.

Step 2. Restart Mozilla Firefox and browse to you the CNN video that you want to download and click play.

Step 3. Once the video starts playing, Press Ctrl + F7

Or

Click the FlashGot Video Icon in the Status bar at the bottom of your screen to automatically begin the download.

Or

Click Tools > FlashGot > FlashGot Media, to begin the download.

Select the destination folder for your video.

It will automatically download the video to the folder.

Jim asks: The DVD drive on my laptop doesn’t work. Is there any way I can install Windows 7 from a flash drive?

Jim, there are many ways by which you can install Windows 7 from a flash drive. However assuming the fact the most of our readers are not exactly computer experts, we would be discussing here the simplest one. This method involves use of free tool provided by Microsoft , to create a bootable flash drive . The process is quick , reliable and works perfectly.

What you need to create Bootable Flash Drive

1: A Flash Drive with minimum 4GB free space. Make sure you backup data from your flash drive before you move forward with any of the steps.

2: Windows 7 USB/DVD Tool. You can download it for free from here .It works on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. ( File Size : 947 KB)

3: Windows 7 .ISO image file.

4: Five minutes of spare time

Step By Step Procedure.

Step 1: Install the Windows 7 USB/DVD Tool

Step 2: Launch the program and browse to the Windows 7 ISO image file and click next .

Step 3: Click on USB Device button to select USB as the media device

Step 4: Choose the USB Drive from the drop down and click begin copying

In case there is not enough space on the flash drive the tool will ask you to erase the content of the flash drive . Click on Erase USB to do so.

This will prompt a new window . Click Yes to continue to next step.

Step 5: The tool will take a few minutes to copy content and make bootable Flash Drive

Once the bootable flash drive has been created, the window would look like this .

Step6: Reboot your machine and you can easily install Windows 7 .

Note : It has been observed while using flash drive for installing Windows 7, when the system restarts the entire process starts from scratch. To avoid this remove the USB once the system turns off and insert it back once its boots up.

Mickey asks, I have recently swapped my MAC for a Windows PC. I can’t seem to find my favorite Instant messenger iChat for Windows. Does it exist? If it does where can I download it?

iChat is native MAC application which has been setting the bar for instant messaging services. To be honest, I can’t think of a single IM client that can be compared to iChat as far as its ease of use, stability and integration features are concerned.

Unfortunately Mickey iChat for Windows PC doesn’t really exist and there is little hope that Apple will be gifting it to Windows users anytime soon. What you can do for now is try out the following alternative clients which are somewhat similar to iChat in features.

AIM (AOL Instant Messenger)

AIM is one of the IM clients that you can look forward to as a replacement for iChat for Windows. It is light, consumes very little system resources and pretty responsive most of the times. To say it in a line – It is a complete Instant Messenger which now even supports integration of social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter.

The best part is that you can chat with your iChat friends with AIM i.e. they don’t need to install AIM separately on their MAC. AIM supports text messaging, audio chat, video chat and group chat features. However group chat with people using iChat seems to be having some niggles and needs to be sorted out.

Pidgin

The next best alternative to iChat for Windows would be Pidgin. With Pidgin you can log into accounts on multiple chat networks like AIM, ICQ, Google Talk, Jabber/XMPP, MSN Messenger, Yahoo, Bonjour, MySpaceIM, and Zephyr. The list doesn’t end there; you can add many more with plugins.

Pidgin also supports most of the features of the other chat clients such as file transfers, away messages, buddy icons, custom similes, and typing notifications.

So there you have it, you can’t have iChat for Windows but you sure can experience something similar with the alternatives. Hope this answers your questions.

In any Samsung Smart phone and type *#0*#. You should see a LCD Test Screen appear, choose the VGA/CIF Cam (as the case may be) to activate it. I doubt you can take pics with it, but I am sure you can have a lot more fun with these hidden menus.

Ashwin asks: I have just bought a brand new Netgear WGR614 wifi router. It works great, but I need to change a few security settings. I can’t access the web based set up page, what is default Netgear IP address ?

Ashwin, default IP address for most of the Netgear routers is 192.168.0.1. You can access the web based setup page for Netgear routers through accessing URL http://192.168.0.1 . However in case, you have received the router from your Internet Service Provider as a package, the Default IP address may differ. In that case you can find it out by the following method.

Finding Default Netgear IP address in Windows Vista and Windows 7

Step 1 . Click on START. In the search box, type ‘cmd’ (without quotes) and press enter. This will launch the command prompt.

Step 2. In the command prompt window type ‘ipconfig’ and press Enter.

Step 3 .Now note down the IP address next to ‘Default Gateway’. This is the current IP address of your router.

Windows XP

Click on Start > Run. In the window that appears, type ‘cmd’ and hit enter to open command prompt Rest steps same as Windows 7.

Mac OS X

Step 1 . Click the Apple logo at the top of the screen, then click “System Preferences.” Alternatively, click the System Preferences icon in the dock.

Step 2 .Click the “Network” icon.

Step 3 .Click the drop-down menu next to “Show,” and select the network connection that you would like to display the information for, such as “Built-in Ethernet.”

Step 4 Click “Advanced,” and make sure that the “TCP/IP” tab is on top on the screen that appears.

Step 5 .Examine the set of numbers next to “Router.” This set of numbers (e.g. “192.168.0.1″) is the address of the device that your computer is connected to on the network.

This way you can easily find out the default IP address for your Netgear router .

Most of us want to Save YouTube Video to Computer for sharing with friends. I am personally a big YouTube bug, spending half of my time on internet streaming videos of robots and latest tech developments.

I often come across some amazing videos that I would like to save for future reference or to share with people. This is important because the number of videos with the same name in YouTube is enormous and until your favorite video is quite popular it is very difficult to search the exact same video again. So let’s see how you can save YouTube Videos to your computer.

There are literally hundreds of ways, we can save a YouTube video, but we are here to discuss the simplest of them all. The simplicity will depend on the web browser you are using. I personally prefer Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome in this respect because they give me choice to choose between different video qualities to download.

Mozilla Firefox

Firefox has a great feature to install add-ons. I personally prefer these two add-ons. You can choose any of them. They work equally great.

FlashGot

FlashGot is one of the earliest add-ons to be introduced to Firefox and has been awarded many a times. It downloads all the type of media files (movies, music files, pictures, programs) running in the particular browser tab with a single click. It uses external download managers to get the highest download speeds.

I personally prefer it to save YouTube videos to computer because; once I stream the video online FlashGot saves it instantly with a single click. I don’t have to wait for the download process to complete.

The problem with FlashGot is that it does give you the option of choosing the video format.

Install FlashGot from here

Easy YouTube Video Downloader

It is my favorite of all add-ons to save YouTube videos to my computer. Why?

Firstly, it allows me to download all possible formats available for the video (has direct download buttons for FLV, 3GP, MP3, MP4, 720p HD and 1080p Full-HD) with a single click.

Secondly it is non intrusive and very convenient as it shows up like a link, only when I am surfing YouTube.

Install Easy YouTube Video Downloader from here

Google Chrome

You can install extensions in Chrome in same manner as you do in Firefox. Here is the extension I prefer to save YouTube Videos to my computer.

Simple YouTube Downloader

Works the same way as Easy YouTube Video Downloader and lets you choose between lots of video formats to download from (FLV, MP3, 3GP, MP4, 720p, 1080p, FULL-HD and more). Download again takes only single click.

However keep in mind that it may not work on some of the videos.

Install Simple YouTube Downloader from here
