News sites like CNN stream FLV videos in a way that it hides the actual URL of the video behind JavaScript. However once you start streaming the video, its file location gets stored in your browsers cache. Now the actual video can be easily downloaded from that address.
Ian, you do not need any CNN video downloader to download CNN videos. Firefox web browser and a simple addon would be more than enough. Here is a step by step guide.
Step 1. Install FlashGot addon in Mozilla Firefox.
Step 2. Restart Mozilla Firefox and browse to you the CNN video that you want to download and click play.
Step 3. Once the video starts playing, Press Ctrl + F7
Or
Click the FlashGot Video Icon in the Status bar at the bottom of your screen to automatically begin the download.
Or
Click Tools > FlashGot > FlashGot Media, to begin the download.
Select the destination folder for your video.
It will automatically download the video to the folder.
The video will be saved to you computer in .flv format which can be played with Media Player Classic or any other Video Players .
