How to Fix Gmail Temporary Error 500: Gmail Access Problem

Daniel asks: I have been trying to login into my Gmail account all afternoon but every time I am getting the same message – We’re sorry, but your Gmail account is temporarily unavailable. We apologize for the inconvenience and suggest trying again in a few minutes. If the issue persists, please visit the Gmail Help Center. I would like to know what is the problem and How do I fix Gmail Temporary Error 500?

As is the case with other online services, Gmail too has its fair share of error. While most of the Gmail errors are temporary and get fixed by themselves (Error 007), some of them do take their own sweet time.

About the Temporary Error 500

Temporary Error 500 is perhaps the most common error message that an internet user encounters in his time online.  In web world, the Error 500 indicates an Internal Server Error and occurs when the server encounters an unexpected condition which prevents it from fulfilling the request.

Gmail Temporary Error could occur due to a lot of reasons but the chances are high that you are facing this error due to one of the following. However before you try out any of the following methods make sure you rule out these:

a) The issue is not limited to your Gmail account only. You can check this by logging into your friend’s or relative’s account from the same computer.

b) The issue is not limited to your computer or network only. You can check this out by trying logging in from a different computer or different network.

Now that you have ruled out the above possibilities, here is what can cause the Gmail Temporary Error 500 & how you can fix it.

1: Browser Cache Issues

2: A conflicting browser extension/Toolbar

3: Internet Security applications like Firewall, Antivirus

4:  Gmail Sever Issue

1: Browser Cache Issues

Generally clearing your browser’s cache and cookies can fix most of the issues you are facing with Gmail.  Therefore our first attempt at resolving a Gmail Login issue should always be clearing cache of your web browser.  If you are using Firefox, Google Chrome or Internet Explorer you can clear cache by simultaneously pressing Ctrl+Shift+Del.

2: A Conflicting Browser Extension/Toolbars

An improperly coded browser extension or toolbar that you might have recently installed recently could be the culprit that is stopping you from accessing your Gmail account. You can check this out by using your browser in Safe Mode.  Safe Mode is supported by Firefox while you can run Google Chrome in Incognito mode to disable all add-ons.

Using Safe Mode in Firefox

Click on Firefox Menu > Help > Restart with Addons Disabled.

3: Internet Security applications like Firewall, Antivirus

Ensure that your internet security applications like Firewall, Antivirus are not interfering with Gmail. Different antivirus software may have different settings for internet usage, but as a general rule you can check the following settings

a) Privacy/Firewall/Allowed sites-

Make sure you add mail.google.com/mail to allowed sites.

b) Cookie Control

c) Internet Security Toolbar – Disable all internet security toolbars that you might have installed.

4: Gmail Sever Issue

Gmail is served by hundreds of data centres around the world which undergo regular maintenance shut downs. While selected data centres are undergoing maintenance, the Gmail accounts are served by out of another data centre. In rare events, this leads the data centre overload and as a result the server is unable to fulfil your request.

If this is the case, you won’t be the only person affected and you can be sure of the fact the people at Gmail would be trying their best to get you up and running as early as possible. All you need to do is be patient and check back you Gmail account after a few hours.

If none of these methods are able to help you , you should immediately contact Gmail Support Centre.
