Apple has released Safari 5 for public usage. It has come with loads and loads of new features. Apple announced it by a press release during the ongoing WWDC 10 . It is claimed that the new features give it a performance boost of almost 30% over Safari 4. Here are the other new features of Safari 5 .
Safari Reader
It is an in-browser reader that removes advertisements and other visual distractions from online articles. While you are browsing web , Safari 5 detects if you are reading a web page with an article or not. When you click the Reader icon in the Smart Address field , the article appears as one continous and clutter free view. All the pages of the article are shown in the the same flow.
Further enhancing the experience are the on screen controls which let you email , print and zoom the pages.
Faster Nitro Engine
The upgraded Nitro JavaScript engine on Safari 5 gives it amazing speeds. Infact it beats Safari 4 by 30% , Chrome 5 by 3% and is twice as fast as Firefox 3.6 .
To further increase the speed , Safari uses a technique called DNS prefetching. When ever you are visiting a page with links , Safari finds the links and looks up their DNS addresses. Whenever you click any of the links , it quickly loads the page without any delay.
Safari Developers have also worked on improving the caching process. With Safari 5 , the pages that you have already viewed load even faster.
Improved HTML 5 Support
Safari has further improved the support for HTML5 . This means now you can videos and other interactive media without using a third party software like Flash player. The support for following have been added.
Full screen for <video> , HTML5 <header> , Closed captions for <video> , HTML5 <hgroup> ,Geolocation , HTML5 <nav> , HTML5 AJAX history ,HTML5 <section> , EventSource ,HTML5 sandboxed <iframe> ,WebSocket ,HTML5 draggable attribute , HTML5 forms validation ,HTML5 <ruby> ,HTML5 <article>, HTML5 <aside> ,HTML5 <footer>
Bing Search
Safari 5 adds Bing as a search engine in addition to Google and Yahoo.
Extensions
Now you can add extensions to Safari and improve its functionallity even further. Safari even provides extension builder for the developers to build their extensions and publically distribute them.
All the Safari extensions are signed with Apple provided digital certificate that comes free Safari Developer Program . Safari Extensions also come with the sandboxing feature that safeguards the extensions being used to access information on users system.
All the Safari extensions can be downloaded and installed from the Safari Extensions Gallery , which is all set to open later this year.
Smarter Address Field
Cant remember the web address that you visited ? Safari 5 takes care of that too . Just type whatever you remember of the address and Safari will be up with suggestions for you to choose from.
Hardware Acceleration for Windows
Safari 5 adds hardware acceleration support for Windows, so rich media and interactive graphics execute smoothly and speedily in the browser.
