How to Turn Off System Restore

Windows System Restore feature makes sure that all the changes that you made to your system can be rolled back. System Restore uses restore points to return system files to earlier point in time.

It is a brilliant feature, except for the fact that it may use up to 15% of your space available on your hard disk and it makes perfect sense to disable it if you are running short on hard disk space.

How to turn off  System Restore in Windows XP

Take the following steps to disable System Restore in XP

Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

In the System Properties dialog box, click the System Restore tab.

Click to select the Turn off System Restore check box. Or, click to select the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box.

Click OK.

When you receive the following message, click Yes to confirm that you want to turn off System Restore:

Use the following guide to turn off  System Restore in Windows Vista

Right Click on the Computer icon and click on Properties.

Click on the System Protection Link on the left hand side of your screen .

You would now see a window with checkboxes next to different hard drive partitions.

Once you uncheck all the drives, you will see the following window. In this window click “Turn System Restore Off”

Right Click on the Computer icon and click on Properties.

Click on the System Protection Link on the left hand side of your screen .

Click the configure button below the list of the drives .

Click the button next to Turn Off System Protection  and click OK

System Restore can help you rollback if something goes wrong. many times it’s important to keep it on.
