So Airtel launched their V-Fiber last year and promised to introduce it across the country, wherever they have their broadband services.
A Quick Update : One of my friends tried taking a new connection from Airtel Broadband and the sales representative promised the Rs 699 /30GB Plan on VDSL. He took the documents and promised to install the connection in two days.
The Connection was installed in 10 days in-spite of 2 days promise but one more thing , the connection was ADSL and not VDSL as promised.
What was the Reason ?
The Reason was that the pillar from which they have been given connection was a bad pillar and can support only ADSL connections and not the VDSL as required by them. Even the technical person I spoke to said that the Pillar 112 has lots of cuts in it’s wiring and so can not support VDSL connection while ADSL can work on the same.
So be sure to ask the technical person in your vicinity whether your area’s pillar supports VDSL or not.
So they launched it in top tier cities across the country and then it was introduced into our city in February.
I got to know about the introduction of V-Fiber in our city by means of an Airtel lineman who came to my home to change the drop wire since it was old and they were changing wires of all the users.
What is V-Fiber ?
Airtel is providing it’s broadband services on copper lines which can theoretically support less speeds like ADSL, ADSL+ ,VDSL and VDSL2+.
According to Airtel
“V-Fiber is a unique combination of fiber and Vectorization technology that delivers super fast speed. That means faster downloads, less buffering, and an ultra-reliable Wi-Fi connection for all the devices in your home. “
What are the Advantages of Airtel V-Fiber ?
- Enjoy it on all the devices in your home. Simultaneously !
- Download a movie within minutes
- Make video calls with zero lag.
- Download songs at the snap of your fingers.
- Download heavy files in a jiffy.
- Stream your favorite videos without buffering.
Now the Review of Airtel V-Fiber
I applied to upgrade my connection to Airtel V-Fiber in March 2017 but nothing happened. Eventually I forgot to upgrade to Airtel V-Fiber till last month.
Last month in April as I got my Airtel Broadband bill, there was a billing error for which I emailed the customer care and asked them to upgrade the speed in the same plan.
The CC executive told me that high speed is possible only in V-Fiber, which is possible in your area and I approved for the upgrade.
The Fine Print
I was communicated that it will take maximum of 20 days to upgrade to Airtel V-Fiber and all the benefits like the 50 GB of Smartbytes which Airtel 2 Million celebration gave me will vanish from my account.
Every time I upgraded or downgraded my plans earlier, it was done within 48 hours so there was a thought in my mind that since Airtel’s TAT( Turn Around Time) is always less than what they communicate.
So I was confident that I will be upgraded to V-Fiber in may be two or three days at maximum.
This was my mistake.
Before placing my upgrade request to Airtel for V-Fiber I was getting a total of 120 GB per month out of which 60 GB was Smartbytes offers from Airtel.
As soon as I placed upgrade request the 60GB Smartbytes vanished. I thought since upgrade usually takes two to three days, my data will be back but nothing happened till 18th day.
I was on the verge of exhausting all the high speed (4Mbps) data on my account. There was only 1GB left after which darkness of FUP (512kbps ) will prevail for the rest of my billing cycle which was around 12 days left.
I contacted Airtel customer care for the solution of the problem else I promised them I will have throw Airtel out of my home.
They added 50 GB promotional data in my DSL Account which will be valid till 3 months.
Then Came The Upgrade
So after 18 days of constantly cursing Airtel finally someone from Airtel called me asking me time to come to upgrade the Modem.
I told to come immediately so that I may start using V-Fiber.
Hey came and brought out the 777VR1 Modem from Beetel which is VDSL2+ Modem with WiFi and 2 Antennae.
He called someone at the back-end and bamn.. I was changed from ADSL line to upgraded VDSL Line.
Modem was installed and my new plan activated in less than 2 minutes after calling the back-end person.
Problems with Airtel V-Fiber
So the person came and installed the modem and asked me for old modem and power supply. I told that I was using my Modem and power supply so will not be giving him back the old modem along with accessories.
He took my signatures on a Airtel Worksheet and went away.
Exactly after 25 minutes of starting my V-Fiber adventure, the modem rebooted abruptly.
I thought, modem must have lost power so did not pay attention. I was watching some videos in evening on YouTube and suddenly it started buffering and changed from Full HD videos to 240p.
What the F***k ?
I have upgraded to a 16 Mbps plan and YouTube is giving me 240p videos, I changed it to 1080p from Auto and then videos won’t start.
What was the issue ? The modem again lost power and started re-connection.
Since modem was installed only few hours ago, It never came to my mind that the V-Fiber modem could have fault.
The next morning I was downloading some files and then connection was lost again.
ADSL or VDSL ?
Since the V-Fiber modem was giving me issues, I tried to change back to my ADSL modem the DLink 2750u to see whether there was an issue in modem.
The Dlink 2750u did not even connect since it was an ADSL modem only and technically I was upgraded to VDSL line. Since I did not know that ADSL modem can not connect on VDSL line I tried with some of my old ADSL modems and all of them refused to connect.
As soon as I connected my V-Fiber modem, the green led on the modem indicated that my connection was back again.
This continued for a week, until my patience was over. I launched a complaint and a service engineer came to my home to check.
He tried some things and entered DNS settings to provide a regular connection.
The same thing happened again and again and I had to call that service engineer again. This time he came with upgraded Firmware and upgraded the VDSL Router from Beetel.
Since the firmware upgrade, it has been four days the modem is working fine and I restart the modem once in a day.
Should you Upgrade to Airtel V-Fiber ?
No doubt the Airtel V-Fiber technology is good but there are some points to note and understand. Airtel is gradually rolling out the V-Fiber Upgrade to everyone where it has planned and some of them are being contacted on regular basis to get their line upgraded.
When Airtel gradually laid their network in the cities, they used copper wires and they are still being used from the Junction-Pillar to your home. In case the underground line from Junction Pillar to your home which is based on copper is quite old then it may or may not provide you the best services on VDSL.
Even if there is an over-head wire from Pillar to Distribution Box is old then it will not give you decent result in VDSL or Airtel V-Fiber.
This is because one of my neighbors is having his V-Fiber connection from a different Pillar and I have a connection from different Pillar.
In my case the Beetel 777VR1 Modem used to restart earlier and gave me issues but not anymore and the culprit was the parallel line interference from my Phone.
Even till today there is a complaint lodged by my neighbor for their V-Fiber not working properly.
There are some areas in our Lucknow where the V-Fiber is not working properly like Kalyanpur Why ?
The reason is very simple .
VDSL does not like any interference with the signals and in Kalyanpur, Lucknow the overhead wires have lots of cuts and are broken easily and therefore the VDSL Line does not work properly resulting in reboot of the Beetel 777VR1 Modem.
My Airtel V-Fiber is working properly, I am using it for over two months now. The first month was technically challenging because of the router or the line issues but not any more.
I am getting decent up-times which are now lasting in days and modem does not try to reboot itself.
In case you want to upgrade to Airtel V-Fiber , please note that you should first ask your local Airtel technician, whether the line can support the VDSL connection or not. In case you want to go for the V-Fiber , I would suggest you to check with any other Airtel V-Fiber user on the same Distribution box about the reboot and line issues.
In case your neighbor on the same Distribution box is getting the good up times and no reboots then you should certainly upgrade your ADSL line to VDSL line otherwise wait for some more time while Airtel rectifies their network lines and upgrades all the copper cables.
So, if you are a Airtel V-Fiber user then comment below about your speeds and rebooting times. If you are not a V-Fiber user then are you upgrading to V-Fiber or not ?
